This presentation introduces concrete use cases on top of the O-RAN-SC near-RT RIC – a container-based implementation of the O-RAN defined E2, O1, and A1 interfaces. These were deployed in 5G lab and live trial environments or integrated with simulators. The presentation will highlight the openness of the near-RT RIC platform enabling use cases that combine xApps from different vendors, including, for example, traffic steering and anomaly detection using ML/AI. We will discuss the xApp architecture used in the live trials as well as the open source use cases in O-RAN SC involving xApps with contributions from Nokia, Samsung, HCL, AT&T, and even academic contributors. The presentation also shows how the results from these efforts feed back into the O-RAN SC open-source development, O-RAN alliance standards and into efforts on standardizing the xApp API towards the RIC platform to enable xApp portability between RIC platforms. The presentation finishes with a look at upcoming versions of the related standards and the recent xApp-related additions in the O-RAN SC near-RT RIC platform, such as support for A1-EI (enhancement information) or the REST interface for E2 subscriptions.
