It’s been nearly two decades since Kathy last stepped into a cold server room or data center to install or manage racks of hardware. She doesn’t miss it. Thank you public clouds. However, IoT growth has created a need for “edge servers”. The burden to manage them falls on IT staff. Keeping OSes and apps updated is like deja vu of maintaining hardware racks, except now the servers aren’t even in the same place. No wonder we keep hearing about cyber attacks and ransomware payments in the news. What if the edge were as easy to maintain as the cloud? Good news: there’s been rapid progress deploying cloud-style apps to the edge -- K3s is a good example. Bad news: maintaining field hardware falls to IT staff, rather than cloud providers. In this talk, Kathy shows how to reduce risk and please developers wanting to run cloud-native apps at the edge. The solution is to run the EVE-OS on edge hardware, and give IT the single TLS connection key. If any app is compromised, IT staff can kill it and redeploy a safe patch. They can deploy Linux or Windows VMs too. Only the IT owner has control over the box below the virtualized apps and VMs. Lightweight EVE-OS offers heavyweight security.
