A 5G deployment enables massive numbers of intelligent IoT devices to connect to and be serviced by a cloud agile network infrastructure. Integration of a WiFi based radio network into a 5G core infrastructure allows such devices to be deployed via Multi-access Edge networking, either via 5G base stations, or via WiFi access points. This allows rapid deployment of latency and QoS sensitive services into a Telco Edge cloud. In this talk, the authors discuss the implications of Multi-access Edge networking for app developers and network builders. They cover the growing telco edge cloud service provider infrastructure, the use of open source frameworks such as Kubernetes, and the use of Intel APIs that implement the 3GPP Non-3GPP Interworking Function (N3IWF) and Application Function (AF) as building blocks to optimise the use of network and compute resources. The authors walk through the steps of setting up Multi-access Edge cloud nodes (based on Kubernetes), and using APIs and triggering mechanisms from telco operators to orchestrate edge applications on demand from an IoT client app.
